Baby’s First Plastics examines how thoroughly plastic has entered everyday life, including objects associated with infancy, comfort, and safety. Constructed from discarded packaging, bottles, bags, straws, synthetic fibers, and other plastic waste, the oversized pacifier transforms a familiar object into something unsettling. Its nipple is formed entirely from molded plastic, suggesting that exposure can begin at the earliest stages of life. ResinCrete, mica powder, and small beads imitate the fine texture of microplastics, connecting visible plastic waste with the smaller particles produced as larger materials fragment and disperse.By transforming a symbol of infancy into that of contamination, this work questions whether we are ever truly safe, even from the moment we are born.
